GSM means grams per square metre: the weight of one square metre of fabric. For hotel towels, it helps describe fabric density. It does not measure every aspect of quality, so compare construction, fibre composition, dimensions, finishing and laundry performance too.
Compare towel weights for your hotel
| Weight | General buying consideration | Epitex UK range |
|---|---|---|
| 400 GSM | A lighter specification to assess when laundry throughput and weight matter | Enquire about a suitable available specification |
| 500 GSM | A mid-weight starting point for everyday guest bathrooms | Chelsea 500 GSM |
| 600 GSM | A fuller feel with more fabric weight per towel of the same size | Madison 600 GSM |
| 650 GSM | A heavier option where a plush feel is a priority | Mayfair 650 GSM |
Does a higher GSM always mean a better hotel towel?
No. Choose the towel that suits the property, guest expectations and wash process. A heavier towel can feel fuller but puts more fabric weight into the same number of pieces. Under comparable conditions it can also take longer to dry. Fibre quality, pile construction and finishing influence the result, so use a trial wash as part of a bulk buying decision.
Calculate the approximate fabric weight
When dimensions are confirmed in centimetres, approximate towel weight in grams is width × length × GSM ÷ 10,000. For example, a hypothetical 70 × 140 cm towel at 500 GSM weighs approximately 490 g; at 600 GSM, approximately 588 g. These are planning calculations, not measured weights for a listed Epitex product.
What should you compare before placing a trade order?
- Dimensions in centimetres and the intended towel type.
- Declared composition and any verified construction details.
- Pack quantity, ordering unit and price for the selected variation.
- Care label, wash trial results and compatibility with your laundry.
- Available stock, delivery postcode and required date.
How many washes will the towels last?
A fixed wash count cannot be inferred from GSM. Actual service life depends on detergent, water quality, wash temperature, mechanical action, drying and handling. Ask for any product-specific testing evidence, follow the care label and monitor a trial batch under your own conditions.
